Department of Applied Chinese, a Comprehensive Development Department
As the world craze for Chinese language goes on, this has elevated Chinese learning to new heights and made Chinese a strong language. To comply with this global trend, Wenzao took the responsibility and established the first Department of Applied Chinese in Taiwan.
Course Features
Courses of the department are divided into Expression for Language Training and Teaching Chinese as a Second Language respectively to equip students with the skills needed in the workplace in the future.
This domain integrates ancient and modern Chinese cultures to a foundation of teaching and creation in order to nourish students with acquired composition writing skills for various genres in the workplace.
This domain focuses on developing students into Chinese teachers, project managers and researchers for the growing needs of the Chinese market.
Through the training courses under the two professional fields, our students will be eligible to be researchers, writers and teachers. Moreover, with the solid language trainings of Wenzao, students are trained to be cross-cultural and language talents with awareness of Chinese literacy, and all these elements make our department even more unique and differentiate us from traditional Departments of Chinese. Besides, students can select double majors, a minor or other programs based on their own interests.
About Our Faculty
Establishing the first Department of Applied Chinese on the island, our department keeps on elevating our department into a higher level. Over the past decade, we have recruited eleven associate professors, ten assistant professors, and one instructors, and sixteen of them have acquired doctorate degrees. Beside, to make our students get strong industrial sense , we have two assistant professors and one special visiting professor who are full of experience from industry. As a result, our department has become one of the departments with the best faculty.
Curriculum Features
We put equal emphasis on both Chinese and English proficiency trainings (24 credits of required English courses) to increase global ties with the Chinese growing market. Students can select a minor based on their own interests, and have interactions with universities in Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea and Mainland China through our programs.
Integrate our courses with languages, cultures, arts, communications and computer information to help students familiarize with contemporary knowledge and practices in workplace.
The framework of our courses are designed with ancient and modern Chinese literacy, our courses aim to develop students into popular professionals in the job market.
Language writing course are offered with low student-to-teacher ratios to provide appropriate guidance to students based on their needs.
International Exchanges and Professional Internships
Our department also signed cooperation treaties with international Chinese- related departments to hold international seminars and organize cross-border research communities of teachers, allowing teachers of the department to have comprehensive international exchanges.
Our department has selected over ten interns to countries throughout the world every year since 2012, these countries including Australia, Thailand, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Korea, Japan, Mainland China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Integrating theory and practices, the professional internships aim to equip students with applied skills in the workplace and teaching field. Undergraduates of the department are required to fulfill a seventy-two-hour internship in schools or companies on the island or overseas. Internship positions are of professional fields ranging from Chinese language teachers, news writers and editors, language teachers, and copy writers. Every year, over thirty students are qualified and offered internship positions abroad, serving as an indicator of international perspectives of students.
Opportunities for Advanced Studies and Professional Employment
Undergraduates from this department are encouraged to take the entrance exams of the domestic or overseas graduate institutes listed below: the Graduate Institute for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, the Graduate Institute for Language Teaching, the Graduate Institute for Journalism and Communications, the Graduate Institute for Chinese Literature, the Graduate Institute for Modern Chinese Literature, or other graduate institutes. In addition, outstanding undergraduates are encouraged to take graduate courses. For further information, students can also refer to regulations for undergraduates’ BA-MA program.

Our students are qualified to hold positions of Chinese language teachers, editors for Chinese teaching materials, multimedia teaching and Chinese teaching developers, Chinese teaching material editors and Chinese language testing workers.
Our students are qualified to hold positions of culture and natural resources researchers and teachers, cultural enterprise workers, Chinese teachers in elementary schools or junior high schools, employees of cram schools, or composition writing teachers in elementary schools or junior high schools.
